Abstract
One of the major activities during 1996 was the development of a new Medium-Term Plan
(MTP) for 1998-2000, designed to enhance food security while protecting the natural resource
base in the fragile environments of dry areas. It involved working together with our national
partners and stakeholders; scientists, managers and the Board of Trustees of ICARDA; and
members of the Technical Advisory Committee. Water is the key natural resource in the dry
areas and is accorded the highest priority in ICARDA’s research; biodiversity and land as
natural resources are all closely linked to water and its availability, and receive major research
attention.
