Gloria Otieno, Ronnie Vernooy. (17/4/2019). Upscaling best performing varieties of millet and beans through seed and product value chains.
Through an on-going project, promising gene bank varieties of millet and beans have been identified through participatory varietal testing and selection using crowd sourcing methodologies and on-station trials, which were conducted in 2017/2018. Farmers have already prioritized 5 millet varieties and 4 bean varieties, which are to be registered/listed as farmers ’varieties and produced using the QDS system by registered farmer groups and community seed banks in Hoima. These varieties need to be disseminated through strong networks with the private sector, using both seed and product value chains and engaging women as entrepreneurs, given that millet is considered a woman’s crop.
