The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) has developed a ‘student-centered’ outreach model that makes use of farm attachments of students with a deliberate strategy to target rural farming households with specific technologies. This approach has been implemented at Egerton University (Kenya) and Uganda Christian University in Uganda who have demonstrated that agricultural universities can impact on rural communities by sharing faculty knowledge and experience. The approach further supports students’ experiential learning and prepares graduates by providing greater understanding by graduates of local farming systems in Africa. Overall, the program was able to achieve the broadest output targets, namely: over 1350 farmers were reached and had mind-set change as a result of farmer trainings and agricultural extension through interning students in their communities and plant clinics; enhanced visibility for the RUFORUM member universities.
