Abstract
In India, ICAR and ICRISAT work as a team for chickpea improvement research and this collaboration has been highly effective in developing improved chickpea cultivars. The chickpea breeding materials supplied by ICRISAT have been extensively used by more than 30 chickpea breeding programs. These breeding materials directly or after further selections have led to release of 44 chickpea cultivars (31 desi + 13 kabuli) in India until 2018. These cultivars have shown high impacts on expansion of area and enhancing the productivity of chickpea, particularly in southern and central India. ICAR-ICRISAT partnership varieties (JAKI 9218, JG 11, JG 14, JG 130, NBeG 119, NBeG 49, Phule Vikram, NBeG 47, Virat, JG 16, Vishal, JG 6, KAK 2, RVG 201, RVG 203, GG 4, PGC 1, Ujjawal, Himachal Chana 1, and NBeG 3) accounted for 53% of the total indent of chickpea breeder seed in India for 2019-20 (produced during 2018-19).
