The advanced clones of biofortified potatoes have been identified through Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS) carrying resistance to Late Blight and Potato Virus Y, high yields, as well consumer preferred traits such as good taste, texture, and yellow flesh color. The PVS (Mother & Baby) trials were implemented between 2017 and 2019 in 11 locations throughout the highlands of Peru with the collaboration of INIA-Peru, NGOs, National Universities and 400 participating farmers. A total of 12 elite clones were identified with an increase of 37 to 50 percent in iron content compared to “Yungay”, a popular commercial variety with broad adaptation and use in Peru for near 50 years. In 2020-2021, three of the selected biofortified potatoes clones have been used in a pilot intervention to improve food and nutritional security in the highlands of Northern Peru (Zero Anemia Project).en_US
