Bean yellow mosaic (BYMV, genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae) is worldwide distributed and the most common cause of mosaic symptoms in faba bean (Vicialabae L.). BYMV was the most frequently found virus in quantitative surveys of faba bean crops in Australia's northern grain region (1 ). Its large host range and rapid transmission by a range of vectors complicate control (2). Genetic resistance is the most practical control option. Studies were initiated to investigate BYMV resistance within the faba bean germplasm pool and to quantify losses caused by this virus.
