Biju Alummoottil George, Shinan Kassam. (18/12/2016). Preliminary analysis: farm management and irrigation performance survey - Abu Dhabi.
This preliminary report on the undertaking of an ongoing farm management and irrigation performance survey aims to provide information on the background for the initiative, the methodological framework for undertaking, and some very early results from data obtained to date. The objective of this survey is to gain a better understanding of land use management practices and irrigation performance on farms within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Closely aligned to an ongoing FSC initiative related to the roll out of an e-diary, the survey aims to inform the further development of the e-diary as well as to collect valuable information which is relevant to an exercise (should ADFCA wish to engage) in forecasting the impact of climate change on agricultural production potential and indicators related to depletion of natural resources. Developed on a tablet (Android) based platform, administration of a survey on 210 farms currently being monitored by ADFCA and FSC for groundwater pumping rates was initiated in late October 2016 and is ongoing. As of December 11th, 121 farms had been surveyed. While the desire is to complete the survey by December 31st, this deadline is very much dependent on human resources and scheduling of FSC extension officers and their ability to fully engage. The preliminary analysis undertaken herein is based on a desire for annual reporting as well as a first screening of the data obtained. Where concerns related to collected data have been noted, and which require cleaning of the data, there has been no summary or reporting. A fuller, and more detailed report, will be provided once the full sample of farms has been surveyed and data cleaned.
