Liba Brent. (27/9/2012). From goats to products to markets: Key moments in fiber production, harvesting, processing and marketing in Sugd.
From goats to products to markets Key challenges are: a) Additional equipment for processing is needed to improve efficiency, productivity and quality. This includes mini‐scouring equipment, dyeing equipment and additional spinning wheels. b) Lack of electricity in winter is a considerable challenge. Women have the most free time in winter, but no power. Alternative energy sources (solar, hydro) are needed. c) Organize financing system for fiber purchasing and processing (revolving fund, micro‐loan). The initial revolving fund will be built from proceeds from sales. d) Test the marketing chain and establish close linkages between spinning & knitting groups and wholesale buyers. This includes assistance with internet, communication, translation, shipping. e) Continue to improve fiber quality to avoid dehairing in the future.
