Abstract
The document provides an exploratory assessment of the Scaling Readiness of gully plugs, a land restoration technique aimed at controlling erosion and sediment accumulation in degraded arid areas of Jordan. Gully plugs interrupt surface runoff in erosion-prone gullies, helping to stabilize soil, prevent further land degradation, and promote vegetation regeneration. The assessment identifies several challenges, including the technical complexity of gully plug design, high construction costs, and the lack of community awareness and secured funding. Key recommendations include developing stakeholder identification processes, improving sensitization programs, and integrating additional community benefits, such as tree planting. The report concludes that while gully plugs are effective in stabilizing erosion, scaling the innovation will require addressing these bottlenecks to ensure sustainability and broader adoption.
