This working paper has been developed within the CRP Livestock program in order to test the LSIPT tool and simulate different scenarios of technologies or management improvement at the farm and household level using three agro-ecological systems in Egypt as a case study of North Africa. It is a first step in the way to organize data, conduct reflexion on the multifunctional role of the livestock and provide an overall approach of the impacts of technology or management improvement on the economic growth and poverty reduction in Egypt by using the LSIPT. The main results confirm the high importance of livestock activities in terms of income contribution for the categories of ‘very poor’, corresponding to the first tercile of income distribution in the three zones. However, this approach reveals that if the dominant livestock system (like cattle and buffaloes in mixed irrigated systems and sheep in grazing land systems) plays an evident role in this ‘very poor’ category, the contribution of livestock to the household cash flow come mainly from the other secondary livestock species like poultry and goats. This toolkit based on a multi-scale and multi-indicator approach from the analysis of the diversity of livestock and household systems to the estimation of national indicators allows better apprehend the multiplier effects of intervention on different categories of households according to the total net income and livestock systems.
