Abstract
Algeria has a total land area of 238 million hectares (ha), of which 47 million ha is suitable for agriculture. Of the 47 million ha, 8 million ha is arable land, 7 million ha is forests and grassland, and 3.2 million ha is under urban use. The agricultural sector contributes 12% to net national income and employs 25% of the active population.
The primary objectives of the agricultural sector are:
(a) improvement of national food security;
(b) protection and conservation of natural resources;
(c) improvement of living conditions and creation of employment in rural areas.
