Polyploids (like wheat and cotton) have genomes that are similar but different enough that they behave genetically like a diploid. They are designated as allopolyploid or disomic polyploids. Polyploids (like alfalfa and potato) which have identical genomes, have identical copies of the same chromosome (all the same color). They are designated as autopolyploids or polysomic polyploids. They DO NOT behave genetically like diploids.
