Dina Najjar. (20/10/2016). Case Synthesis Report- Ain Jemaa, Saiss, Morocco.
Ain Jemaa, more particularly the Solh cooperative, fits into the D quadrant (high gender gaps and low economic dynamism). The rating is relational and was determined comparatively between the three communities selected for the study in Saiss of Ain Jemaa, Betti and Sidi Slimane (Figure 1). Ain Jemaa have limited natural resources endowment (rain fed agricultural conditions), and relative to the other two case studies, women were limited in their mobility. For example, they are not allowed to work outside outside or far away from their houses. These rigid gender norms can be also attributed to limited job opportunities (low economic dynamism) as mostly men carry out paid work in the community. By comparing across the three case studies, our findings indicate that the higher the economic dynamism, the more progressive are the gender norms.
