Abstract
The first International Conference on Faba Beans, sponsored by the
ICARDA/IFAD Nile Valley Project in cooperation with the Government of Egypt,
was held at the Pyramids Holiday Inn Hotel, Cairo, Egypt, on March 7-11, 1981.
The primary objective of this conference was to focus on the
problems of irrigated faba beans in the Nile Valley of Egypt and northern
Sudan. The topics covered included the current status of breeding methodology
and major breeding objectives, physiology and agronomy of faba beans under
irrigated conditions, symbiotic nitrogen fixation, diseases, pests, Orobanche,
weed control, nutritional quality, and economic aspects. All presentations
and discussions were geared to have practical relevance to research on
increasing the productivity and food value of faba beans in the Nile Valley.
