Abstract
In Egypt, the cultivated area off Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) has decreased since last
decade .The cultivated area devoted to faba bean in Egypt was 322 thousand faddan in
1997/98-2001/02 seasons declined to only 98 thousand faddan in 2011/2012 season
(Faddan =4200 m2). However, the seed yield per unit area has increased from 8.13 to 9.15
ardab/fad in the same seasons, with an increase of 13%. Despite the increasing in
productivity, the total production is not reaching the self-sufficiency. The highest
percentage of self-sufficiency was existed in 1997/98–2001/02 seasons (99%), these
percentages reduced to only 28% in 2011/012 season. In addition there is a wide gap
between the yield potentiality of recommended production package and farmer’s yield,
which reached about 20.2%.
