Cereal grains are grown on 80 percent of the cultivated area of Morocco and contribute approximately 50% of the cash value derived from plant production. Fifty percent of the cereal area is planted to barley, 31% to durum wheat and 9% to bread wheat. The production areas include a variety of agroclimatic conditions, ranging from semi-arid to high rainfall, from low elevation to mountainous areas, with each environment presenting its own challenge to growers, as well as scientists.
