Abstract

hisreviewprovidesbasicinsightintothecurrentstatusandproductionofberseemclover(TrifoliumalexandrinumL.)inMediterraneanbasincountries.FromtherainfedcropfarmingoftheAegeanIslandtoricebasedcroppingofsaltaffectedsoilsofNileDelta,berseemcloverhasanexceptionalroleinthesustainablecrop-livestockfarmingsystemsoftheMediterraneanbasin.Itisgenerallysowninpurestandsorinmixtureswithannualgraminaceousspeciesforgrazingduringthewinterperiod,forhayingorensilinginspring.Itisadaptedtomildclimatesandneutraltoalkalinesoilsandhastheconstraintsofbeingpronetofrostandtoacidic,saltyandhydromorphicsoils.
