The present study analysed farm level crop production efficiency for cereal-oriented agricultural livelihood system (ALS) types in the Satiri sub-district, western Burkina Faso. The typological results of a previous study that surveyed 428 farms were used. The technical efficiency was analysed using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method for the whole study sample and separate ALS types. A binary logit model was used to identify factors affecting farm crop production efficiency. The study has three main findings. Firstly, the farm level crop production technical efficiency is very low (0.28 in average for whole population). Second, the heterogeneity of agricultural livelihood influences the technical efficiency of farm crop production with pro-poor farm being the least efficient (0.24). Thirdly the factors affecting the technical efficiency of smallholder farms’ production are common and type-specific affecting factors. Therefore intervention seeking to improve the crop production technical efficiency performance of smallholder farms should consider agricultural livelihood heterogeneity. In terms of methodological implications, these findings show that farming design studies should account for agricultural livelihood heterogeneity to reveal better insights that could help in the development of sustainable farm design options.en_US
