S. Barghouti, J. P. Srivastava, E. E. Saari, G. Chancellor. (28/4/1977). Fourth Regional Winter Cereals Workshop: Barley Volume I. Beirut, Lebanon.
The publication of the Proceedings of the Fourth Winter Cereal Workshop. held in Amman, Jordan, from 24-28th April, 1977, is a continuation of a series which had its origins in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1972. The First Workshop was concerned with three main subject areas? diseases? reviewing the status of Septoria, tritici and yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis) in the region; agronomy, and the status of agronomic research in the area; and, a review of the known sources of resistance to Septoria and yellow rust. The Second Regional Wheat Workshop in Ankara, Turkey, in May 1974, was concerned with tillage and cultural practices for wheat under low rainfall conditions. The Third Regional Wheat Workshop was held in Tunis, Tunisia, in 1975, and focused on the subject of durum wheat improvement, weed control, crop rotation with annual forage and legumes, and seeds. The Fourth Workshop in this series designated Barley as an appropriate and opportune subject. The current Workshop has drawn from a much broader base than previously because of the smaller number of workers in this region, and the additional support and interest provided from sources other than the traditional ones of FAO of the United Nations, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and CIMMYT. Additional support and funding for this Workshop has been provided by the Montana State University-United States, Agency for International Development (AID) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). The barley research group at Montana State University initiated the idea of a conference on barley in the Middle East.
