Abstract
The present 'Workshop on Cereal Disease Methodology' is the fifth in a series of workshops instigated in 1976 under the sponsorship of the Royal Government of the Netherlands in collaboration initially with The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (C1MMYT)and more currently with both CIMMYT and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA). Previous workshops were conducted in India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Kenya. Consequently, this is the first Cereal Disease Methodology Workshop to be held in West Asia, which is after all the cradle of world wheat and barley production. The purpose of the workshop is clearly defined as follows: 'The Workshop aims to bring together cereal researchers from as many of the countries of the region as possible and, through their active participation in theoretical work, field practicals and demonstrations, to provide them with an enhanced knowledge of disease identification and assessment and of modern methodologies for the development of disease-resistant cereal varieties'.
