In rural Syria, men and women work in agriculture, mostly on small farms. Mechanization of some tasks, new opportunities for off-farm employment, and the increase of skilled rural jobs have affected the division of labor between men and women and between household and hired labor. This paper draws on a survey of 47 landowning households in four villages of Aleppo Province, Syria, supplemented by visits to villages supplying labor. Various factors are evaluated for their effect on the choices to use male or female, household or hired labor in crop and livestock production. The paper was presented at the conference on gender issues in farming systems research and extension. February 26 - March 1, 1986. University of Florida, Gainesville. Floridaen_US
